“Thoroughly Modern Millie” Sings and Taps Its Way onto the Dixie’s Stage

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. – Bethel University Renaissance Theatre’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, a madcap musical romp from the Roaring 20’s takes the stage 7 p.m. April 13 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 14 at the Dixie Carter Performing Arts and Academic Enrichment Center.

Set in New York City in 1922, when flappers were bobbing their hair, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” based on the 1967 Academy Award-winning film starring Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore, recounts the tale of Millie Dillmount, a small town girl from Kansas who comes to the big city with big plans. Millie has her sights set on becoming a secretary and marrying her wealthy boss.

But things go more than a little haywire when naïve Millie becomes involved with a slave trade that steals young girls to sell in The Far East; her boss drags his feet with the awaited proposal; and the man she really loves doesn't have a dime to his name.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is filled with flappers, dashing leading men and a hilarious, evil villainess that audiences love to hate.  From show stopping tap numbers to a "Fred & Ginger” style routine on a window ledge, this high-spirited musical is true to the long-standing spirit of New York City.

The winner of six Tony Awards, including the coveted Best Musical award, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” was the most awarded new show on Broadway in 2002.

Tickets for Bethel University Renaissance Theatre’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” at The Dixie are $15 and can be purchased online at www.DixiePac.net or from The Dixie’s Box Office 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays by calling 731-986-2100.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is a part of The Dixie Carter Performing Arts & Academic Enrichment Center’s Bethel University Musical Performance Series.  Show sponsor is McKenzie Banking Company/Foundation Bank.
