The Caverns Opens to Two Nights of Sold-Out Shows Award-Winning PBS Series Bluegrass Underground Kicks of Inaugural Season

PELHAM, Tenn. – The Caverns celebrated its opening weekend with two sold-out evenings for the inaugural taping of the award-winning PBS series Bluegrass Underground.

The Caverns, seven months and millions of years in the making, is the new and permanent home to Bluegrass Underground, as well as a slate of shows already on the books for 2018 with more to be announced in the coming months.

Billy Strings and The Sweet Lizzy Project (Saturday) and Aaron Lee Tasjan and the Sam Bush Band (Sunday) kicked off a weekend of performances as Bluegrass Underground entered its 8th season of taping. Beginning with this season, the series will be recorded in its new home, equipped with state of the art sound and lights. Award-winning cinematographer Allen Branton designed the lighting and Sound Image did the sound, each team adding subtle enhancements to the natural beauty and acoustics of the cave.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better opening weekend,” said Todd Mayo, owner of The Caverns and creator of the Bluegrass Underground series. “Our goal has always been to offer a unique experience to our patrons, as well as quality amenities and ease of access.  Based on the reaction this weekend, we’ve met that goal, and maybe even surpassed it.”

Prior to the music kicking off Saturday’s grand opening event, Mayo hosted an official “ribbon” cutting ceremony that saw a giant banjo stand in for the usual ribbon. Several area dignitaries were on hand to participate in the ceremony and welcome the new attraction’s team to the county. The grounds were packed with people from the area as well as guests who had traveled from other states to experience the first night of The Caverns.

"We are very excited and grateful that Grundy County is the permanent home of The Caverns and Bluegrass Underground,” said Senator Janice Bowling. “The Caverns is the perfect tourist attraction to showcase the grandeur of our rural region and the sounds of Tennessee. Come join us and experience the natural beauty of Grundy County enhanced by the greatest underground music venue in the world."

“We are extremely pleased and excited about Bluegrass Underground making its permanent home at The Caverns in Pelham, TN in Grundy County,” noted Grundy County Mayor Michael Brady. “Anytime you can bring a positive economic asset to your community that does not take away from who you are, but rather brings it to the forefront and celebrates your home's natural beauty, that's a good thing. This will be vitally important on several fronts. I believe it will have a multiplier effect on our community for jobs, tourism and entrepreneurs.”
