Fun Fest Announces Sunset Concert Series Entertainers, The Avett Brothers to Close Fun Fest 2018

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Fun Fest 2018 takes place July 13-21 at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. The music groups have officially been announced for the 2018 Sunset Concert Series. Casting Crowns will kick off the series on Thursday, July 19 followed by Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo on Friday, July 20. The festival finale will be The Avett Brothers on Saturday, July 21.

Thursday night’s Contemporary Christian Concert will open up with Christian praise band, Passion. Songs from Passion have become some of the most recognizable and unforgettable worship anthems of this generation. With more than 1.8 million units sold and a multitude of chart-topping singles such as “How Great Is Our God,” “God Of This City,” “One Thing Remains,” “Even So Come,” and “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” listeners across the world continue to be impacted by the music of Passion.

The headliner for this year’s Contemporary Christian Concert is Christian rock group, Casting Crowns. Casting Crowns has produced some of the most compelling songs of this generation. Songs like “Voice of Truth,” “East to West,” “Lifesong,” “Until the Whole World Hears,” “Courageous” and “Thrive.”

Casting Crowns is the second-fastest Christian band in history to have their first two albums certified platinum. The local church has been the base for Casting Crowns’ music since their label debut release in 2003. With more than nine millions records sold and the title of Billboard’s top-selling act in Christian music since 2007, it’s still where the music is created. Hall and his bandmates – Juan and Melodee DeVevo, Megan Garrett, Brian Scoggin, Josh Mix and Chris Huffman – continue to work in ministry in their respective churches. The local church is the heartbeat of the band and the songs are an outpouring of that. The Very Next Thing, Casting Crowns’ latest offering, is a collection of intimate songs as well as upbeat, fresh sounding tracks with impactful lyrics centered around identifying and acting on what’s right next to you.

The Contemporary Christian Concert is sponsored by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Tele-Optics Inc. and 88.3 WCQR.

The headliners for The Friday Night Concert are Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo have formed one of the most successful partnerships in music history. During their nearly four-decade career, they have won an unprecedented four consecutive Grammy Awards, as well as three American Music awards. Their undeniable chemistry, Benatar’s mezzo-soprano vocal range and Giraldo’s trail blazing work as a producer, guitarist and songwriter created some of rock’s most memorable hits. These include, “Promises in the Dark,” “Hell is For Children,” “We Live For Love,” “Love Is A Battlefield,” “Hit me with Your Best Shot,” and “We Belong.” Their rock and roll love affair has endured for 38 years and they continue to tour every year, wowing audiences everywhere.

The Friday night concert is presented by Appalachian Power, Domtar and WQUT.

Fun Fest 2018 will end the week with American folk rock band, The Avett Brothers. The Avett Brothers combine bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, indie rock, honky tonk, and ragtime to produce a novel sound

The Avett Brothers’ latest album, True Sadness, achieves the group’s highest career debut to date and dominated multiple charts, arriving at No.1 on Billboard’s Top Albums Chart, No. 1 Top Rock Albums Chart, and No. 1 on the Digital Albums Chart and No. 3 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart. The album was also nominated for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Performance for “Ain’t No Man” by the 2017 Grammy Awards. In addition, the Rick Rubin produced album, True Sadness continues to garner overwhelming critical acclaim with many considering it their finest release yet.

Eastman is the presenting sponsor for the Saturday Night Concert.

The Eastman Fireworks Spectacular will follow The Avett Brothers concert at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Additional Series sponsors include Eastman Credit Union and Visit Kingsport.

Cintas’ Friends of Festus VIP packages are a value-added option for concert-goers.  This year, Friends of Festus packages can be purchased ONLINE ONLY, which is an exciting change for 2018. This should make the users’ experience much easier when packages go on sale.

Another change to Fun Fest in 2018 is the addition of a Clear Bag Policy for the stadium concerts. As events strive to provide increased safety to all participants and the community, more and more festivals and venues are moving to a policy for items allowed inside events. This year, coolers are not allowed in the stadium and all items will be subject to search. Clear bags should not exceed 12”x6”x12” and approved bags will be available for purchase outside the stadium. The full clear bag policy is available at www.FunFest.net.
